Description: A major manufacturer of dry-type transformers, serving a broad range of military, industrial, commercial and marine environment applications, has an immediate opening for a Transformer Design Engineer. The breath of the dry-type transformers encompasses single-phase and three-phase general purpose (up to 5000 kVA, 50/60/400 Hz), Military and QPL (up to 125 kVA), ruggedized commercial duty (up to 15 kV) and specialty transformers (e.g., ferro resonant, low audible noise, low temperature rise, convection cooled, water-cooled, explosion proof, etc.). Knowledge of other magnetic components such as reactors (inrush current limiting, load balancing, motor starting), and inductors (DC filter chokes), is a serious advantage, as well as application knowledge of AC/DC drives. This position reports to the Engineering Manager.
BASIC REQUIREMENTS: The successful candidate must demonstrate knowledge of materials, hardware and processes used to manufacture dry-type transformers. Familiarity with military and commercial Standards pertaining to materials, hardware and processes, knowledge of Electrical Products Codes and Standards, dimensioning and tolerancing to ANSI Y14.5M standards, are all basic requirements of the position. The ability to perform dimensional tolerance studies or descriptive 2D and 3D geometry analysis necessary to develop engineering drawings and/or other documents is also a must.
Position Responsibilities: Primary duties and responsibilities of the Transformer Design Engineer include, but are not limited to, the following: Under the direction of a Supervising or Project Engineer, perform transformer design functions as specified by customer and/or product requirements - -
- Review customer specifications and propose alternatives to resolve any technical issues
- Evaluate electrical and mechanical design calculations and parameters, with regard to complexity, reliability and manufacturability
- Utilizing individual creativity and knowledge of practical/cost-effective design methods, prepare draft design and cost estimate
- Assist in contacting supplier(s) and getting cost estimates of designed components
- Prepare Bill of Materials for proposed designs
- Perform original design work after all reviews and approvals are received
- Provide guidance and direction to mechanical designers and drafters in conceptual designs and the preparation of mechanical drawings
Minimum Requirements and/or Qualifications: Other than the Basic Requirements, as well as the knowledge and experience to perform the Position Responsibilities stated above, the follow minimum qualifications include - -
- BS in Electrical Engineering; Master degree preferred
- Five (5) years of dry-type transformer design and development experience
- Proficiency with AutoCAD, Mechanical Desktop 3D modeling or equivalent systems
- Good verbal/written communication and problem solving skills are required to provide technical support to manufacturing, marketing and customers
